Several Victories. One Victory took one day and the other took the
better part of a year.
Picassos with a Piece of Chalk
In May a group of Metanoia's older students entered the North
Charleston Arts Festival's Sidewalk Chalk Competition and won first
place in the group category. They earned their category by doing a
three panel design portraying this year's Young Leaders Program theme
song title "Strength, Courage and Wisdom."

they helped get put up. The state recently also lowered
the speed limit along Spruill Ave. to 35 mph thanks to their

Students march to have speed limit reduce in
summer of 2007. |
Last summer student's in Metanoia's CDF Freedom School held a community
march to have the speed limit lowered along Spruill Ave. Although
the march had resulted in the lowering of speed limits elsewhere in the
community and the placement of flashing school zone lights on Spruill
the SC Dept. of Transportation was reluctant at first to lower the speed
limit. But thanks to Metanoia's continued advocacy and the help
of Mayor Keith Summey, Councilman Michael Brown and Councilman Kurt Taylor, we
received news in April that the speed limit would indeed be lowered to
35 mph and that has now been done. The SC DOT has also agreed to put
four way stop signs around Chicora Elmentary to make the neighborhood
even more safe. Thanks to an initiative that was begun by our
Freedom School Scholars and continued by many community leaders our
neighborhood is now safer for everyone. Special thanks to the SC
DOT as well for their cooperation and willingness to listen to the
communities' requests for further assistance.
