New Home Construction and Existing Property Rehabilitation: In 2005, Metanoia entered into partnership with the Nehemiah Community Revitilization Corporation, one of South Carolina’s leading non-profit housing developers.  Nehemiah helped Metanoia finance the initial rehabilitation of two homes for community homeowners.  From there, Metanoia became a Community Housing Development Organization and gained grants from the City of North Charleston, the State of South Carolina, and the Lowcountry Housing Trust Fund to either build new or rehabilitate additional homes.

By developing homeownership opportunities in our area, Metanoia Brings community stability to both individual families and complete blocks.   On each street where we have redeveloped a home, we have seen significant decreases in the amount of negative activity.  We follow up with our homebuyers with a monthly homeowner newsletter and a yard of the month contest.  If you are interested in owning your own home we invite you to contact Tony Joyner in our office.  We also invite you to visit either of the photo galleries above to check on the progress of Metanoia's housing development projects.

The Difference a Homeowner Can Make

Kraft Avenue in Chicora/Cherokee had become a symbol to community residents of what can go wrong in the neighborhood due to disinvestment of community assets.  When Metanoia began taking a look at this street there was an abandoned park adjacent to an abandoned home. As a result, the corner by the park was continuously occupied by people hanging out and some of these people were up to no good.

Metanoia began by convening a meeting with the City and residents along that street to devise a strategy.  The city closed the park and Metanoia acquired the vacant home.

Within a few months Tatum Hamilton bought the renovated home on Kraft Ave. and the loitering presence on that street has virtually vanished.  Mrs. Hamilton began by keeping the corner well lit at night and by keeping trash in the area picked up. The result is a much safer street for everyone on the block.

If you want more information, or if you wish to find out about other homeownership seminars that are happening before the above date please don’t hesitate to contact Tony Joyner at 529-3014.
